The Ultimate Moving Checklist

At Two Amigos, we’ve helped thousands of people transition into their new homes with less stress and more confidence.

Whether you're relocating across town or across the country, having a solid plan makes all the difference. That’s why we’ve created this Ultimate Moving Checklist: a step-by-step guide to keep you organized.

*Highlighted steps can be skipped if you hire a professional packer ;)

8 Weeks to Go

  • Create a moving binder or digital folder to organize EVERYTHING move-related

  • Start an inventory list of what needs to be packed and add it to the folder you just made!

    • Pro Tip: Note fragile and high-value items

  • Begin decluttering — donate, sell, or toss what you don’t need

    • Pro Tip: Host a yard sale or list items on Kijiji.

  • Research moving companies and schedule in-home estimates

  • Look into schools, utilities, and local services at your new location (local movers can skip this one)

6 Weeks to Go

  • Choose your moving company (we recommend Two Amigos ;)

  • Check if your home or renters’ insurance covers moving

  • Notify your landlord if you're renting

  • Arrange school transfers and gather school/medical records

  • Start collecting boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, and labels

  • Begin packing, start with rarely used items (seasonal gear, décor)

    • Pro Tip: Label boxes by room and contents (saves you SO much time on moving day)

4 Weeks to Go

  • Change your address for:

    • Driver’s license, Health cards, Insurance

    • Employer, Doctor, Dentist

    • Post office and memberships

    • Bank accounts, credit cards, and the tax office (Canada Revenue Agency)

  • Schedule utility disconnection/connection (electricity, gas, water, cable, internet)

  • Plan your room layout at the new place (might not seem important, but this will make your move-in day way less stressful)

  • Start using up pantry and freezer foods

  • Complete necessary home repairs (especially for rentals)

  • Book the elevator and confirm parking arrangements for the moving truck (if applicable)

  • Pack up lesser-used spaces: storage, guest rooms, etc.

  • Get rid of items that you’re not allowed to move, such as gasoline, propane, chemicals, and liquids

  • Arrange for the transportation of your plants and pets (movers can’t move them)

2 Weeks to Go

  • Confirm your moving date with the movers

  • Arrange childcare or pet care for moving day

  • Gather important documents (birth certificates, passports, medical records) — set aside for your ‘essentials suitcase/box’

  • Get to know the new neighbourhood: grocery stores, parks, veterinary clinics, and other essential amenities

  • Continue packing room by room

    • Pro Tip: Save big furniture for last and disassemble if possible, to save space and protect items in transit

1 Week to Go…

  • Clean your house or schedule cleaning services

    • Pro Tip: Don’t forget the stove!

  • Take down and wash the curtains

  • If you’re moving a fridge, clean, defrost, and dry it the day before moving

  • Pack your essentials suitcase, which includes anything you might need once you arrive at your new home (wallets, keys, meds, IDs, chargers, toiletries, bedding, toilet paper, snacks, scissors, instant coffee, kid comforts, tools, and essential kitchen supplies)

Moving Day!

  • Disassemble remaining furniture (if needed)

  • Unplug and pack the remaining appliances

  • Determine which boxes and items are last to load and set them aside

  • Do a final sweep: check all closets, cabinets, drawers, and storage nooks

  • Before you leave, double-check that:

    • Water is shut off

    • The lights are turned off

    • Windows are closed and locked

    • The thermostat is turned down (especially if it’s summer)
